Two common behavioral challenges are difficulty differentiating behavior for different environments and analyzing the impact of one's actions on others. As a licensed clinical social worker, I drew upon my expertise in behavioral health to create this social thinking resource and cover expected and unexpected behaviors (including their impact on others) in common settings from the classroom to the grocery store. This series of activities can be implemented with all students, a small group, or an individual student. Once it is taught, it can be revisited as an independent activity or center to prime students before they are asked to engage in expected behaviors.
This resource all of the following PLUS an interactive online format designed to work for individual or group work:
* 18 behavior cards
* 9 emotion cards in three formats: emoji, cartoon, and photographs
* 8 setting cards in color and black and white
* Unlimited blank cards for customization
Ask students to match the behaviors to the setting and choose the emotions others might feel in each scenario. Cards can be laminated and velcroed for a reusable activity or students can color and glue for a one-time worksheet. I recommend photographing students acting out behaviors and emotions to customize the cards to your classroom. In the digital option, students can drag and drop or circle their selections on each page to fully access the content online with no printing or prep required. Depending on how you use the activities, this can be anywhere from no prep to an ongoing photo project.
