Every classroom needs a space for students to self-regulate. Too often, we don’t give students the opportunity to deal with their emotions. We wait until their behavior is out of control and then remove them from the classroom. Having a space within the classroom where students can learn to process their emotions and cope teaches valuable social-emotional skills, decreases challenging behaviors, and ensures that students are not missing valuable instructional time.

Every calm down corner will look different depending on the classroom, students, and you. I have created this guide to help you think through what elements to include and to share my personal favorites. It is designed to help you create a comfortable space with tools to meet students’ various needs when they are experiencing strong emotions.
